Word to Text

Choose a Word document and get its words as plain text, ready to paste anywhere. It’s read on your device, and nothing is uploaded.

or drop it here. A .docx file (Word 2007 or later), up to 25 MB.

Between paragraphs

Choose a Word document to get its text.

Words only: layout, styles, list bullets and numbers, images, headers, footers, footnotes and comments are left out, and tables come one cell to a line.

Your document stays on your device: it’s read by this page, and nothing is uploaded or saved.

Just the words from a Word document

Sometimes all you need from a Word file is its text: to paste into a web form, an email or a plain-text editor, to count the words, or to read it without Word. This tool reads the .docx file in your browser, with mammoth, an open-source converter, and gives you the text with no formatting to clean up.

How to use it

  1. Choose a .docx file, or drop it on the box. It can be up to 25 MB.
  2. Pick what goes between paragraphs: a blank line, or a single line break.
  3. Check the text and its word and character counts.
  4. Copy it, or download it as a .txt file in UTF-8, so accents and symbols come through as they are.

What comes through, and what doesn’t

  • Kept: the words of every paragraph, heading and list item, in order; tabs; line breaks made with Shift+Enter; the text of links; text boxes, each after the paragraph it sits in; ☒ and ☐ for ticked and empty check boxes.
  • Tables are flattened: each cell’s text comes on its own line, row by row, left to right.
  • Left out: layout, fonts and styles, list bullets and numbers, images, link addresses, headers and footers, footnotes and endnotes, comments and equations. The notes say when something else was skipped, such as a field.
  • Tracked changes: deleted text is skipped and inserted text kept, as if every change were accepted.

Word 2007 and later only

The tool reads .docx, the format Word has saved in since Word 2007, and its template and macro versions. Macros are never run. An older .doc file needs saving as .docx first: open it in Word, choose Save As and pick Word Document (.docx). A password-protected file needs its password removed in Word.

Good to know

  • Your document stays on your device. It’s read by this page, and isn’t uploaded, logged or saved.
  • Counts follow the Word and Character Counter’s rules, so they match it; to count text you type or paste, use that page instead.
  • Got a PDF? PDF to Text gets the text out of PDFs; this page reads Word files only.
  • Want the formatting too? Word to HTML keeps headings, lists, links and tables.

Frequently asked questions

Why won’t it open my .doc file?
A .doc file is in the format Word used before 2007, a different kind of file that this tool can’t read. Open it in Word or another word processor, choose Save As, pick Word Document (.docx), and choose the new file here. A .docx protected with a password needs the password removed in Word first.
Where did the headers, footers and footnotes go?
They’re left out. The tool reads the body of the document: its paragraphs, headings, lists, tables and text boxes. Headers and footers aren’t read, and footnotes, endnotes and comments are skipped, so copy them from Word if you need them.
How do tables come out?
Each cell’s text becomes its own paragraph, row by row and left to right, so a table of names and seats comes out as a name, a seat, a name, a seat. The columns aren’t lined up. To keep a table as a table, use Word to HTML.
Is my document uploaded?
No. It’s read by this page on your device, in a background worker that can’t send anything anywhere. Nothing is uploaded, logged or saved, and closing the page clears it.
