CSV to Excel
Paste CSV or open a file and get an .xlsx workbook in which every cell is already a number or text, so leading zeros and long numbers survive.

The first rows and columns, as they’ll be in the sheet: numbers on the right, as Excel shows them, and text on the left.
Everything happens on this page, on your device: your data is never uploaded, sent or saved.
Turn CSV into an Excel workbook
Opening a CSV file in a spreadsheet app makes the app guess what each value is, and its guesses can drop the leading zero of a ZIP code, cut a long ID number to 15 digits or turn a code into a date. This tool writes an .xlsx workbook in which every cell is already a number or text, so nothing is guessed when it opens.
How to use it
- Paste CSV, or choose or drop a .csv, .tsv or .txt file of up to 25 MB.
- Name the sheet and check the options.
- Press Make the Excel file, and look over the preview and the notes under the summary.
- Download the .xlsx file.
What the options do
- Delimiter: found for you, as the one that splits the first rows into the same number of values, or chosen: comma, semicolon, tab or pipe.
- Find numbers: plain numbers such as 42, -3.5, 0.25 and 1e6 become numbers you can add up. Everything else stays text.
- Keep every cell as text: nothing is changed at all, which suits codes, IDs and phone numbers.
- Header: the first row stays text, even a heading such as 2026.
- Widen columns: each column fits its longest value, up to 60 characters.
What stays text
Values with a leading zero (02134), a comma (1,250 or 3,5), a currency or percent sign, dates, which mean different days in different countries, and whole numbers longer than 15 digits, which Excel can’t hold exactly. Cells starting with =, +, - or @ are always text, never formulas, because a CSV file from someone else can hide formulas that run when it’s opened. A negative number such as -42 is still a number.
Good to know
- One plain sheet: no bold, frozen or filtered header rows, and no formulas.
- Excel’s limits apply: 1,048,576 rows, 16,384 columns and 32,767 characters in a cell.
- Text encodings: UTF-8 and UTF-16 files are read as they are, and a file that isn’t UTF-8 is read as older Windows text (Windows-1252).
- Nothing is uploaded: the CSV is read and the file made on your device.
- Making JSON for code instead? CSV to JSON does that; this page makes a workbook for Excel, Google Sheets, Numbers or LibreOffice. Excel to CSV goes back the other way.
