HTML to Markdown

Paste HTML or open an .html file and get Markdown back. The HTML is only read, never run, and nothing leaves your device.

Paste HTML, or open or drop an .html file, up to 25 MB. It’s only read: nothing in it runs or loads.

Paste HTML above, or open a file, to turn it into Markdown.

Your HTML stays on this page: it’s converted on your device, and nothing is fetched, sent or saved.

From HTML to tidy Markdown

Moving a web page, a blog post or an email into a Markdown editor, a README or a notes app means rewriting its tags as Markdown. This tool does it in your browser with turndown, an open-source converter. Paste the HTML, or open a saved .html file, and copy the Markdown.

How to use it

  1. Paste HTML, or open an .html file or drop it on the box, up to 25 MB.
  2. Pick the styles you like for headings, bullets, code blocks and links.
  3. Check the Markdown, then copy it or download it as a .md file.

What the options do

  • Headings: # marks (# Title, ## Section), or underlined with === and ---. Underlining exists only for the top two levels, so smaller headings always use #.
  • Bullets: -, * or + before each item; numbered lists keep their numbers.
  • Code blocks: fenced between ``` lines, or indented four spaces.
  • Links: inline, as [text](address), or as references, [text][1], with the addresses listed at the end.

What comes through

  • Headings, paragraphs, bold, italic, strikethrough, lists, links, images (as links to the same picture), quotes, code and horizontal rules.
  • Tables become Markdown tables, with the first row as the header, since Markdown needs one. A table inside another table is flattened into paragraphs.
  • Scripts, styles, frames, drawings and form fields are left out, as is the page’s head, title included. Other tags, such as div and span, keep only their text.
  • Links that would run code, such as javascript:, keep only their text.

Safe to paste anything

The HTML is read by your browser’s own parser into a separate, inert document: its scripts never run, and nothing it names, from images to stylesheets, is loaded. Nothing is put into this page, and nothing is sent, logged or saved.

Good to know

  • Want to see the result rendered? Markdown to HTML shows Markdown as a page. It goes the other way: it turns Markdown into HTML, and this page turns HTML into Markdown.
  • Colors, fonts and layout have no Markdown form, so they’re dropped.
  • Spaces are tidied the way a browser shows them: runs of spaces and line breaks become one space, except inside code blocks.
  • Tables and strikethrough are written in GitHub Flavored Markdown, which Markdown to HTML reads; an app that reads only the original Markdown shows them as typed.

Frequently asked questions

Can it fetch a web page for me?
No. It works only on HTML you paste or open, and it never fetches anything. To convert a page, save it from your browser or copy its source, then open or paste that here.
Why do my tables look plain?
Markdown tables hold text only: no merged cells, colors or widths. A cell that spans columns is followed by empty cells so the rest line up, and line breaks inside a cell become spaces. The first row becomes the header row, because a Markdown table needs one.
What happens to images?
Each becomes a Markdown image, written as an exclamation mark, the description in square brackets and the address in round ones, pointing to the same address as before. The picture itself isn’t copied, and an address that was relative to the old site may need fixing.
Is my HTML sent anywhere?
No. It’s converted on this page, on your device. It’s read into a separate, inert document, so nothing in it runs or loads, and nothing is sent, logged or saved.
