From a fixed page to text with structure
Markdown is plain text with a few marks for structure: # before a heading, - before a list
item, a blank line between paragraphs. Notes apps, wikis, documentation sites and code repositories all read it, and
it stays readable as it is. Converting a PDF to Markdown lets you bring a manual, a set of notes or a report into
those tools without retyping its structure.
How to convert
- Choose up to 10 PDFs, each up to 100 MB.
- Press Convert to Markdown.
- Download each .md file, or all of them as a ZIP.
How the structure is found
A PDF doesn’t say which line is a heading; it only says where each piece of text sits and how big it is. The tool
works out the body text size from the whole document, then treats clearly bigger, short lines as headings, up to
three levels. Lines starting with a bullet become - items and numbered steps keep their numbers.
Lines the page width broke are joined back into paragraphs, and a heading that wrapped onto two lines stays one
heading. Lone page numbers at the top or bottom of a page are dropped.
Characters that mean something in Markdown
A *, a [, or a # at the start of a line would turn into formatting, so the
tool puts a backslash before each one where it would. Underscores inside words, as in file_name,
are left alone, because Markdown doesn’t read them as formatting.
Using the result
Open the .md file in any text editor to check it, or drop it into the notes app, wiki or repository you use; most
show a formatted preview. Skim the headings first: a caption or a pull quote set in big type may have become a
heading, and deleting its # marks fixes it. Then rebuild any tables you need and add links and
emphasis where they matter.
The simplified layout
- Left out: pictures, fonts, colors, bold and italics, links, columns, and page headers and footers.
- Tables come out as lines of text; rebuild any you need as Markdown tables.
- Scans hold pictures of text, so there’s nothing to convert, and the tool says so.
- Other formats: PDF to Word for an editable document, PDF to Text for a .txt file.
