How to convert a PDF to PNG
- Choose up to 5 PDFs, each up to 100 MB.
- Pick a resolution, and type pages if you don't want them all.
- Press Convert to PNG. Download images one by one, or all of them as a ZIP.
Why PNG
PNG stores every pixel exactly, so text, lines and charts come out with clean edges and no blur around letters. That makes it the better choice when a page has to be readable as an image: pasting a page into a slide or a document, posting a chart, or keeping a crisp record of a form. The trade-off is size: a page full of photos can make a large PNG, and PDF to JPG suits those pages better.
Choosing the resolution
- 72 DPI makes an image the size of the page as a PDF reader shows it at 100%: good for small previews.
- 150 DPI is sharp on most screens and keeps files moderate. An A4 page comes out about 1,240 × 1,754 pixels.
- 300 DPI is for printing or zooming in: about 2,480 × 3,508 pixels for A4, four times as many pixels as 150 DPI, so much larger files.
Very large pages, such as posters, are drawn at the highest resolution your browser allows, and the result's note says when that happened.
How it draws the pages
Pages are drawn by PDF.js, the PDF reader used in Firefox, inside your browser. Fonts that aren't embedded in the
PDF are drawn with standard substitutes. Each image is named after the PDF and its page number, such as
report-page-3.png, and pages are drawn on white, as they look in a reader.
