PDF · one file, up to 100 MB

Used when “Same on all sides” is off. Sides are as the page shows on screen.

Pages

Used with “Only these pages”. “8-” means page 8 to the end.

How to crop a PDF

  1. Choose a PDF, up to 100 MB. A picture of its first page appears.
  2. Type how much to trim from the edges, in millimeters, inches or points. The outline on the picture shows what’s kept, and changes as you type.
  3. Leave “Every page” selected, or choose “Only these pages” and type them. Then press Crop PDF and download the copy.

When cropping helps

Scans often come with a dark band or a strip of the scanner lid around the page. Slides saved as PDF can have wide white borders, and a page printed to PDF from a website may carry a header and footer you don’t need. Trimming the margins makes the content fill a phone screen, and makes it bigger when the page is printed to fit the paper.

Setting the margins

  • Same on all sides: one number trims every edge by the same amount.
  • Each side on its own: untick “Same on all sides” to set the top, bottom, left and right separately, for a band only at the top of a scan, say.
  • Units: an inch is 25.4 millimeters, and a PDF measures in points, 72 to the inch.
  • As you see it: sides are measured on the page as it shows on screen, so a page stored turned in the file is trimmed the way it looks.
  • Mixed sizes: every page loses the same amount from each edge. A page too small for the margins is left as it was, and the result says which.

What cropping does, and doesn’t do

Cropping hides the margins; it doesn’t delete what’s in them. The PDF keeps the whole page and records a smaller visible area, its crop box, plus a matching trim box for printers. Readers show and print only that area, but the hidden part is still in the file, and anyone with PDF-editing software can show it again. To remove something for good, such as a name or a number in the margin, use Redact PDF instead.

The rest of the file

Text stays sharp and selectable, links and form fields keep working, and the file size barely changes. The copy keeps its name with “-cropped” added. To put every page on one paper size afterwards, use Resize PDF to A4 or Letter.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get the trimmed part back?
Yes. The trimmed area is hidden, not deleted, so a PDF editor that can change a page’s crop box can show it again. Keep your original file too, so you can always start over.
Does cropping make the file smaller?
Hardly at all. The whole page is still stored, so the size stays about the same. To make a PDF smaller, use Compress PDF.
Why wasn’t one of my pages cropped?
Either it isn’t among the pages you chose, or it’s smaller than the margins you typed, so nothing would be left. The note under the result lists any page left as it was.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Your browser crops the pages, and the new PDF is saved straight to your device.
