What a PDF says about itself

Every PDF carries details you don’t see on the page. The author field often holds the name of whoever owns the computer that made it, or a company account. The title can be an old working title, the dates show when it was created and last changed, and the creator and producer fields name the apps used. Before you send a document to a client, publish it, or submit it anonymously, it’s worth removing them.

How to use it

  1. Choose up to 20 PDFs, each up to 100 MB.
  2. Press Remove metadata.
  3. Download each cleaned copy, or all of them as a ZIP. Each one is named with “-clean” added.

What gets removed

  • The document information: title, author, subject, keywords, creator and producer, the creation and change dates, and any extra entries an app added.
  • XMP metadata: the XML block where many apps keep the same details again, often with editing history. Blocks attached to pages, pictures or fonts go too.
  • Old copies: a PDF that was edited and saved again can still hold earlier versions of its details. The cleaned copy keeps only what the pages need, so those go as well.

The note under each result lists what was found and removed, so you can see the difference.

When it matters most

  • Sending a resume: the author field can still name a former employer’s computer or a template’s maker.
  • Anonymous submissions such as reviews, applications judged blind, or feedback forms, where your name shouldn’t travel with the file.
  • Publishing a report: titles from earlier drafts, old project names and editing dates can tell readers more than you meant.

To see a PDF’s details yourself, open its Document Properties in your PDF reader, before and after cleaning.

What stays

The pages look exactly the same: text, pictures, links, bookmarks and form fields are kept. The file’s internal ID, a random-looking code readers use to tell files apart, also stays; it doesn’t contain your name.

Other places details can hide

  • Comments and notes keep their author’s name. Delete or review them in your PDF reader first.
  • Photos inside the PDF can carry their own camera details. Removing those from the original pictures with the EXIF Remover before making the PDF is the surest way.
  • Password-protected PDFs need the password removed first.

Frequently asked questions

What exactly is removed?
The document information (title, author, subject, keywords, the app that made the file, the PDF maker, the creation and change dates, and any extra entries) and every XMP metadata block, the hidden XML copy of the same details. Old copies left from earlier edits go too.
Does it change what the pages show?
No. The pages, text, pictures, links, bookmarks and form fields stay exactly as they were. Only the details stored about the file are taken out.
Is anything else in a PDF personal?
Sometimes. Comments keep their author’s name, photos inside the PDF can carry their own camera details, and the pages themselves can show a name. This tool doesn’t touch those; check comments in your PDF reader before sharing.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Your own browser cleans each PDF, and the copies are saved straight to your device.
