How to merge PDF files

  1. Choose your PDFs, drop them onto the box above, or paste them. You can add up to 20 files, each up to 100 MB.
  2. Put them in order with the arrows beside each file. The merged PDF follows the list from top to bottom, so the first file’s pages come first.
  3. Press Merge PDFs, then Download. You get one file, named merged.pdf.

What stays the same

Every page of every file is copied into the new PDF exactly as it is. Nothing is turned into an image or compressed again, so text stays sharp and you can still select and search it, pictures keep their quality, and each page keeps its own size and orientation. A US Letter page next to an A4 page stays exactly as it was, and a landscape page stays landscape.

What doesn’t come across

A few things belong to a whole document rather than to its pages, and a merge can’t carry them over:

  • Bookmarks, the outline in your PDF reader’s side panel, aren’t kept.
  • Fillable form fields keep how they look but may no longer be fillable, so fill in and save forms before merging.
  • Links to websites keep working. Links that jump to another page of the original file may not.
  • The title and author saved in the originals aren’t copied, and nothing about you or this site is written into the new file.

Files it can’t merge

A password-protected PDF can’t be merged, and that includes one that opens normally but blocks editing. The tool names the file and makes nothing, so you never end up with a merged PDF that silently skipped one. Remove the protection in the app that made the file, or ask the sender for an unprotected copy, then try again. The same goes for a file that turns out not to be a PDF, or one that’s damaged.

Big files and phones

Because everything happens in your browser, the limit is your device’s memory, not an upload speed. A few ordinary documents merge in a moment. Very large files, or many at once, take longer and need more memory. If a phone struggles, merge in smaller groups, then merge the results. To go the other way and pull pages out of a PDF, use Split PDF.

Frequently asked questions

Are my PDFs uploaded?
No. The merge runs in your browser, on your device, and the merged file is saved straight to it. Once the tool has run once, it even works with Wi-Fi off.
Is there a watermark or a page limit?
No watermark is added, and there’s no page limit. The limits are 20 files at a time, up to 100 MB each, and the memory your device has.
Will the merged PDF be bigger than the originals?
It comes out at roughly the size of the originals added together. Pages are copied as they are rather than compressed again, so nothing is lost.
Can I merge more than 20 files?
Merge them in groups of up to 20, then merge the results together the same way.
