Sign a document without printing it
A lease, a permission slip, a delivery note: plenty of documents only need your signature on a line before you send them back. Printing, signing and scanning takes time and needs a printer. This tool puts your signature straight onto the PDF, on the page and in the spot you choose, and saves a signed copy.
How to sign
- Choose the PDF, up to 100 MB. A picture of its first page appears, with a box on it.
- Draw your signature in the white pad, or switch to Type it and type your name.
- Pick the page, then drag the box to the signature line and resize it.
- Press Sign the PDF and download the signed copy.
Drawn or typed
A drawn signature looks most like your own; a mouse is harder to sign with than a finger or a pen, so take a couple of tries and press Clear in between. A typed signature writes your name in a flowing italic. Either way, the blank space around the signature is trimmed, so it fills the box neatly, in dark blue ink.
Making it look right
- Use the whole pad: sign across most of its width, at a steady speed. Small, quick strokes look shaky when enlarged.
- Match the line: on a letter-size page, a signature about 2 inches (5 cm) wide usually fits a signature line. Make the box about that wide on the page picture.
- Check at full size: open the signed copy at 100% zoom to see it as it will print.
What this signature is, and isn’t
This is a picture of a signature added to the page, like a signed and scanned printout. It isn’t a certified digital signature, and it isn’t a legally binding e-signature service with identity checks and a record of who signed when. If a document has to be signed that way, the sender will usually send you a link to their own signing service. Whether a picture signature is accepted is up to whoever asked for it.
Good to know
- The rest of the PDF stays exactly as it was; only the signature, and the date if you ticked it, are added.
- Forms first: to fill in a form’s fields before signing, use Fill PDF Forms, then sign the result here.
- Password-protected PDFs need the password removed first.
