How to print a PDF as a booklet
- Choose up to 10 PDFs, each up to 100 MB. Each one becomes its own booklet.
- Pick the paper you’ll print on, A4 or US Letter, and press Make booklet.
- Print the booklet on both sides of the paper, choosing “flip on short edge”.
- Keep the sheets in order, fold the stack in half, and staple along the fold.
The page order
Pages folded into a booklet sit out of order on the sheets: the first and last pages share the outside of the first sheet, and the middle pages share the inside of the last one. This tool works that out for you. Each sheet carries four pages, so blanks are added at the end to make a multiple of 4. For 8 pages, the sides read 8 and 1, 2 and 7, 6 and 3, then 4 and 5.
The rule, for anyone checking: with N pages after padding, sheet k (counting from 0) has page N − 2k on the left and 2k + 1 on the right of its front, and 2k + 2 on the left and N − 2k − 1 on the right of its back.
Printing it right
- Flip on short edge turns each sheet over the way the booklet opens. If the backs come out upside down, choose the other flip setting.
- Test first: print just the first two pages of the booklet file, on one sheet, to check before printing the rest.
- No two-sided printing? Print the odd pages, put the stack back in the tray, then print the even pages.
- Page size: each page is scaled to fit half a sheet, its shape kept, so an A4 page becomes A5 size on an A4 sheet. Pages of different sizes are each centered in their half.
- Staples: put them on the fold, from the outside. A long-arm stapler reaches the middle of the sheet; otherwise, open a regular stapler over a soft surface.
Good to know
Pages are placed, not turned into pictures, so text stays sharp. Links and form fields don’t carry over into the booklet. In a thick booklet the middle pages stick out slightly at the edge once folded; this tool doesn’t adjust for that, so trim the edge if it matters. The file keeps its name with “-booklet” added.
