How to resize a PDF to A4 or Letter

  1. Choose up to 10 PDFs, each up to 100 MB, or drop them on the box.
  2. Pick the paper, A4 or US Letter. Leave “Fit the whole page” selected unless the pages must cover the paper.
  3. Press Resize PDF and download the resized copies.

When pages are the wrong size

Documents made in the US are usually Letter, 8.5 × 11 inches; most other countries use A4, 210 × 297 mm. Sent from one to the other, a document prints with an edge cut off or a strip of white, or the printer stops and asks for the other paper. Scans, slides and PDFs joined from several sources can also mix sizes, which looks uneven when you scroll through them and prints some pages larger than others. This tool puts every page on the paper you choose.

How each page is fitted

  • Its shape is kept: a page is scaled evenly, never stretched or squashed, and centered on the paper.
  • Fit the whole page: everything shows, with white margins where the page’s shape differs from the paper’s.
  • Fill the paper: the page grows until the paper is covered, and the parts that stick out are trimmed. They’re hidden, not deleted.
  • Portrait or landscape: each page gets the paper the same way round as itself, so a wide slide lands on landscape paper.
  • Turned pages: a page stored sideways in the file but shown upright keeps its turn, and lands on the paper the way it shows.
  • Already the right size: those pages are left exactly as they are.

Text stays text

The pages are scaled as they are, not redrawn as pictures, so text stays sharp at any zoom and you can still select and search it. Links, form fields and comments move and scale with their page, and bookmarks and the document’s details, such as its title, stay as they were.

Good to know

A Letter page on A4 is scaled to about 97% of its size, with a little white above and below; an A4 page on Letter is scaled to about 94%, with white at the sides. Each copy keeps its name with “-a4” or “-letter” added. To trim margins rather than resize, use Crop PDF; to print pages as a folded booklet, use PDF Booklet.

Frequently asked questions

Will the text get blurry?
No. Pages are scaled as they are, not turned into pictures, so text stays sharp at any zoom, and you can still select and search it.
What’s the difference between Fit and Fill?
Fit shows the whole page, with white margins where its shape differs from the paper’s. Fill enlarges it until the paper is covered and trims what sticks out; the trimmed parts are hidden, not deleted.
Should I choose A4 or Letter?
Choose the paper the printer will use. Letter is the usual size in the US and Canada; A4 is the usual size in most other countries.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Your browser resizes the pages, and the new PDF is saved straight to your device.
