How to add page numbers to a PDF

  1. Choose up to 10 PDFs, each up to 100 MB.
  2. Pick where the numbers go and how they read, the number to start at, and whether to skip a cover page.
  3. Press Add page numbers and download the numbered copies.

Why number a PDF

Page numbers make a document easy to talk about and hard to mix up: "see page 4" works on a call, a printed stack can be put back in order, and a reviewer can spot a missing page. PDFs put together from scans, exports and several files often have no numbers, or numbers that restart in each part. Adding them to the finished file fixes both.

The choices

  • Position: any corner or the middle of the top or bottom edge, half an inch in from the edge so printers don't cut it off.
  • Style: a plain number, "Page 1", or with the total, "1 of 9" and "Page 1 of 9". The total counts only numbered pages.
  • Start at: useful when this PDF is part 2 of something, or when its first pages are front matter.
  • No number on the first page: leaves a cover page clean; numbering begins on the second page.

How the numbers look

Numbers are set in a small, dark gray, standard PDF font, the same on every page. They're placed according to how each page is shown, so a landscape page stored turned still gets its number upright in the right corner. Pages of different sizes in one file each get their number in the same relative place.

The rest of the file

Nothing else changes: text remains selectable and searchable, and links, bookmarks and form fields stay. Each file is named after the original with "-numbered" added. If you're also combining files, join them first with Merge PDF and number the result, so the numbering runs through the whole document.

Frequently asked questions

Can I leave the cover page without a number?
Yes. Tick “No number on the first page”. Numbering then starts on the second page, with the number you choose.
Can numbering start at a number other than 1?
Yes. Set “Start at” to any whole number, which helps when a PDF continues from an earlier part.
My PDF already has numbers printed on it. What happens?
The new numbers are added on top of the page; the old ones stay. Choose a corner where nothing is printed, such as the top right, to avoid overlap.
Are my files uploaded?
No. The numbers are added in your browser, and the new PDF is saved straight to your device.
