A short animation from your own pictures

A GIF plays a few pictures one after another, and it works in almost any website, chat or email: the steps of a recipe, a before and after, a product turning around, or a set of screenshots showing how to do something.

How to use it

  1. Choose 2 to 50 pictures or drop them on the box above: JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF or BMP, up to 50 MB and 40 megapixels each.
  2. Put them in order with Earlier and Later.
  3. Set one delay for every frame, from 0.1 to 10 seconds, or a delay for each frame.
  4. Choose whether it loops forever or plays a set number of times, then pick the width and shape.
  5. Watch the preview, press Make the GIF, and download it.

The settings

  • Width and shape: pick a width from 240 to 800 pixels and a shape, like the first picture’s or a fixed one. A tall shape is brought down so no side is over 800 pixels. Each picture keeps its own shape inside, with the background color around it.
  • Colors: a GIF frame holds 256 colors. One palette for all frames gives steady colors and a smaller file; a palette for each frame suits pictures whose colors are very different.
  • Dithering mixes those colors in fine dots so photos and gradients look smooth. Turn it off for flat graphics.

Keeping the file small

A GIF stores every frame in full, so its size grows with the width and the number of frames, and fifty photos can run to several megabytes. For a chat or an email, try 320 or 480 pixels and only the frames you need. Show the finished GIF to check it before you download.

Good to know

  • Private: your pictures are opened and turned into a GIF in this page, on your device. Nothing is uploaded, sent or saved, and the GIF carries none of their metadata.
  • The preview plays your pictures as they are; the finished GIF shows the colors as they’ll look.
  • An animated GIF you add opens as its first frame.
  • Other jobs: for a still GIF from one picture, use JPG to GIF. To turn a GIF’s first frame back into a PNG, use GIF to PNG.

Frequently asked questions

Why do the colors look a little different in the GIF?
Each GIF frame holds at most 256 colors. A frame with more, such as a photo, is reduced to 256, and dithering mixes them in fine dots so gradients don’t band. Graphics and screenshots with few colors keep theirs exactly. Show the finished GIF to see the result before you download it.
How long can each frame show?
From 0.1 to 10 seconds, the same for every frame or set frame by frame. A GIF stores delays in hundredths of a second, so a delay is kept to the nearest hundredth.
What does playing a set number of times do?
The GIF plays through that many times and then stops on its last frame. Forever loops without end. The setting is stored in the file, though an app or site can still choose to loop every GIF on its own.
Are my pictures uploaded?
No. They’re opened and turned into a GIF in this page, on your device, and nothing is uploaded, sent or saved. Reloading or closing the page clears them.
