Why convert GIF to PNG

GIF is an old format that many logos, icons, diagrams and clip art were saved in years ago. PNG replaced it for still images: it’s lossless too, keeps transparency, and is accepted by more design apps, document editors and printing services. Converting is also the simple way to take one still frame out of an animated GIF, for a thumbnail, a slide or a profile picture.

How to convert

  1. Choose up to 30 GIF images, each up to 50 MB. You can also drop them on the box or paste one.
  2. Press Convert to PNG.
  3. Download each PNG, or all of them together as a ZIP.

Animated GIFs

Your browser reads the first frame of a GIF, so an animated GIF comes out as a still PNG of that frame, and the note under the result says the GIF was animated. If you need the animation itself, keep the GIF: PNG files made here are still images.

What the PNG keeps

  • Every pixel and color of the frame, exactly. A GIF can hold at most 256 colors, and the PNG shows those same colors; it can’t smooth out the banding or grain some GIFs have.
  • Transparency: clear pixels stay clear. GIF has only fully clear or fully solid pixels, so edges look the same as in the GIF.
  • Size in pixels stays the same. For a small icon you need bigger, the Image Resizer can enlarge it, though it can’t add detail.

What else to know

  • File size: a PNG is often about the same size as the GIF, sometimes smaller, sometimes a little bigger.
  • Names: icon.gif becomes icon.png. A file that can’t be read gets its own message, and the rest still convert. For a JPG instead, use GIF to JPG.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to an animated GIF?
It becomes a still PNG of its first frame, and the result says the GIF was animated. PNG files made here don’t move.
Does it keep the transparent background?
Yes. Clear pixels in the GIF stay clear in the PNG.
Does it lose quality?
No. The PNG holds exactly the colors and pixels of the GIF frame. It can’t add colors a GIF never had: GIF holds 256 at most.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Your own browser does the conversion, and the PNGs are saved straight to your device.
