Why convert BMP to PNG
A BMP stores every pixel with no compression, so files are large. PNG keeps exactly the same pixels but packs them tightly, without losing anything, so it’s the format to choose when the picture must stay exactly as it is: screenshots, diagrams, drawings from Paint, icons, and images you’ll edit again. PNG is also accepted by nearly every website, document and app, while many refuse BMP.
How to convert
- Choose up to 30 BMP images, each up to 50 MB. You can also drop them on the box.
- Press Convert to PNG.
- Download each PNG, or all of them together as a ZIP.
Lossless, and usually much smaller
PNG’s compression finds repeated colors and patterns, so it works best on pictures with flat areas and sharp edges. A screenshot or a diagram often ends up a small part of the BMP’s size. A detailed photo or a noisy scan has fewer repeats, so its PNG is still big, although smaller than the BMP. If a photo’s file size matters more than keeping every pixel, BMP to JPG makes a far smaller file.
Your browser reads the BMP
The conversion uses your browser’s own BMP support, which covers the common kinds: black-and-white, 16 and 256 colors, and full color. A rare or damaged file it can’t read gets a message saying so, and the other files still convert.
What else to know
- Colors are kept as they are; a 256-color BMP comes out as a full-color PNG that looks the same.
- Size in pixels stays the same. To make it smaller, use the Image Resizer.
- Names:
drawing.bmpbecomesdrawing.png. A file that can’t be read gets its own message, and the rest still convert.
