Why convert WebP to PNG
WebP is an image format made by Google that many websites use to keep pictures small, so saving an image from the
web often gives you a .webp file that some apps and upload forms won’t take. PNG is the format to
choose when the image is a logo, an icon, a screenshot or a graphic, or when it has a transparent background: it
keeps every pixel and every see-through area exactly. For photos, where a small file matters more,
WebP to JPG is usually the better fit.
How to convert
- Choose up to 30 WebP images, each up to 50 MB. You can also drop them on the box or paste one.
- Press Convert to PNG. There’s nothing to set: PNG has no quality setting to choose.
- Download each PNG, or all of them together as a ZIP.
Nothing more is lost
PNG is lossless. It stores the picture exactly as your browser decoded it from the WebP, with no second compression step to soften it. If the WebP was saved in WebP’s own lossless mode, as graphics often are, the PNG holds exactly the same pixels. If it was saved in lossy mode, as most photos are, the PNG keeps it just as the WebP looks, but it can’t bring back detail the WebP had already left out.
Why the PNG is bigger
Storing every pixel without loss takes room. A photo can come out several times the size of its WebP. A simple graphic with a few flat colors grows much less, because PNG packs flat colors well. If the PNG is too big for where it’s going, the Image Compressor can bring it under a file size you choose (for a PNG, it gets there by making the picture smaller in pixels), or you can make a JPG instead.
What else to know
- Transparency is kept, including soft edges and shadows.
- Animation: an animated WebP becomes a still PNG of its first frame.
- Hidden details such as camera data aren’t copied into the PNG. Colors are converted to sRGB, the standard range screens use, so they look the same.
- Names: each PNG keeps its WebP’s name, so
logo.webpbecomeslogo.png. A file that can’t be read gets its own message, and the rest still convert.
