Why convert AVIF to PNG

AVIF is a newer image format, built on the AV1 video format from the Alliance for Open Media, and more and more websites use it because it makes very small files. Saving an image from one of them can leave you with an .avif file that your photo editor, office program or design app won’t open. PNG opens almost everywhere, keeps transparency, and loses nothing more when you edit and save it again, which makes it the right choice for logos, graphics, screenshots and images you’ll keep working on. For a photo you only need to send, AVIF to JPG makes a smaller file.

How to convert

  1. Choose up to 30 AVIF images, each up to 50 MB. You can also drop them on the box or paste one.
  2. Press Convert to PNG.
  3. Download each PNG, or all of them together as a ZIP.

Your browser reads the AVIF

The tool uses your browser’s own AVIF support: current Chrome, Edge and Firefox, or Safari 16 or later. On an iPhone or iPad, Safari’s version follows iOS, so iOS 16 or later. An older browser can’t read AVIF at all, and the tool tells you the file couldn’t be read rather than making a broken PNG.

What the PNG keeps

  • Every pixel your browser decoded, exactly. The conversion loses nothing; it can’t add back detail the AVIF itself left out.
  • Transparency, including soft, half-clear edges.
  • Colors, in sRGB, the standard range screens and most apps use. An AVIF made for HDR or extra-wide color is brought into that range, so very bright or very saturated areas can look a little flatter.

What else to know

  • File size: expect the PNG to be much bigger than the AVIF, often many times bigger for photos.
  • Animation: an animated AVIF comes out as a still PNG of one frame.
  • Names: banner.avif becomes banner.png. Size in pixels stays the same. A file that can’t be read gets its own message, and the rest still convert.

Frequently asked questions

Which browsers can convert AVIF?
Current Chrome, Edge and Firefox, and Safari 16 or later, which on an iPhone or iPad means iOS 16 or later. An older browser can’t read AVIF, and the tool says the file couldn’t be read.
Does it keep a transparent background?
Yes. PNG keeps see-through areas exactly, soft edges and shadows included. For a photo without transparency, AVIF to JPG makes a much smaller file.
Why is the PNG so much bigger than the AVIF?
AVIF is one of the most compact image formats there is, while PNG keeps every pixel without loss. The same picture can take many times the space as a PNG.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Your own browser does the conversion, and the PNGs are saved straight to your device.
