Why convert GIF to JPG
Upload forms, print services and photo apps often accept only JPG. If the picture you have is a GIF, such as an old photo, a saved animation or an image from a forum, converting it to JPG makes it acceptable almost anywhere. It’s also the quick way to get a still picture out of an animated GIF to use as a thumbnail or in a document.
How to convert
- Choose up to 30 GIF images, each up to 50 MB. You can also drop them on the box or paste one.
- Leave the quality at 90, or change it.
- Press Convert to JPG, then download each JPG, or all of them together as a ZIP.
Animated GIFs and transparency
- Animation: your browser reads the first frame, so an animated GIF becomes a still JPG of that frame. The note says the GIF was animated.
- Transparency: JPG has none, so clear pixels become white, as if the image were placed on a white page. For a clear background, use GIF to PNG.
Choosing the quality
The number, from 1 to 100, sets how much detail the JPG keeps; 90 suits most pictures. A GIF holds at most 256 colors, so converting can’t make it richer, but the JPG won’t lose much more either. JPG blurs sharp edges slightly, which shows on text, outlines and flat-color graphics; for those, PNG is the better format. For photos that were saved as GIF, JPG usually gives a smaller file.
What else to know
- Size in pixels stays the same. To change it, use the Image Resizer.
- Names:
animation.gifbecomesanimation.jpg. A file that can’t be read gets its own message, and the rest still convert. - To aim for a file size, for a form with a limit, try the Image Compressor.
