When a form wants a 20 KB image
Some online forms ask for very small images: a scanned signature, a small photo for an ID card or a membership record, sometimes with a limit as low as 20 KB. A photo straight from a phone is usually several megabytes. This tool brings each image to 20 KB or less, keeping it as large and clear as that allows.
How to use it
- Choose up to 30 images, each up to 50 MB: JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF or BMP.
- Leave "Save as" on JPG unless the form needs another format.
- Press Compress to 20 KB, check each note, then download one by one or as a ZIP.
How it gets to 20 KB
First it searches for the highest JPG quality that fits, without changing the size in pixels. If even the lowest sensible quality is too big, it makes the picture smaller in 15% steps and searches again, and the note tells you the size it ended at, such as "Resized to 480 × 360 to reach 20 KB". Photos are turned upright, and hidden details such as the camera and GPS location are left out of the copy. If saving an image again would only make it bigger, you get the original back exactly as it was.
Get a better result by preparing the image
- Crop first. Every pixel of background costs bytes. A signature cropped close to the ink, or a face cropped to the head and shoulders, keeps far more detail at 20 KB.
- Signatures: write with a dark pen on plain white paper and photograph it in good light. A clean, high-contrast signature compresses very well.
- Check the size the form wants in pixels. If it asks for, say, 200 × 230 pixels, resize to that first with the Image Resizer; at that size 20 KB is plenty.
If it can't reach 20 KB
You get the smallest version made and a note such as "Couldn't get under 20 KB; the smallest was 26 KB". Cropping tighter usually fixes it. If your limit is a little larger, Compress Image to 50 KB keeps much more detail, and the Image Compressor lets you type any size you need.
