Why convert JPG to JXL

JPEG XL (.jxl) is a newer image format, standardized as ISO/IEC 18181, with lossy and lossless compression and transparency. Convert a JPG to JXL when a website, an app or a project asks for .jxl files, or to see how your own photos come out in the newer format and compare the sizes. For sharing, the JPG is still the safer file: many browsers and apps can’t open JXL yet.

How to convert

  1. Choose up to 30 JPG images, each up to 50 MB. You can also drop them on the box or paste one.
  2. Leave the quality at 90, or change it (below).
  3. Press Convert to JXL, then download each file, or all of them together as a ZIP.

Choosing the quality

The number, from 1 to 100, sets how much detail the JXL keeps. 90, the default, suits photos. Higher keeps more fine detail and makes bigger files; lower makes smaller files with softer detail. Each result shows its size, so you can compare it with the JPG and try another number. Converting can’t restore detail the JPG already lost, and a JPG that was compressed hard may not shrink at all.

What this page does, and doesn’t

It converts the picture: your browser decodes the JPG, and the page encodes its pixels as a new JXL. JPEG XL also has a lossless way to repack a JPG so the original can be rebuilt exactly; this page doesn’t use it. The page doesn’t rely on your browser to make JPEG XL either: it brings an encoder, libjxl, the reference JPEG XL library, compiled to run in your browser. Your photos never leave your device.

Good to know

  • First use: the first time you convert, the page downloads the encoder from this site, about 1.4 MB. After that it starts at once.
  • Size: photos up to 12 megapixels (for example 4000 × 3000) can be made into JXL here; a bigger one gets a message, and the Image Resizer can make it smaller first. Above 4 megapixels a faster setting is used, so the file can come out a little bigger.
  • Rotation and camera details: sideways phone photos come out upright, and camera details, GPS location included, aren’t copied.
  • For the web today, JPG to WebP makes photos that current browsers all show. To turn a JXL back into a JPG, use JXL to JPG.
  • Names: photo.jpg becomes photo.jxl. Size in pixels stays the same. A file that can’t be read gets its own message, and the rest still convert.

Frequently asked questions

Will the JXL be smaller than my JPG?
It depends on the photo, the quality you choose and how hard the JPG was already compressed. Each result shows its size, so you can compare. If a JXL comes out no smaller, keep the JPG.
Is this JPEG XL’s lossless JPEG recompression?
No. JPEG XL can repack a JPG so the original file can be rebuilt exactly, but this page doesn’t do that: it converts the picture’s pixels into a new JXL at the quality you choose.
Who can open a JXL file?
Safari can show JPEG XL from version 17, but many browsers and apps can’t open it yet. Keep your JPGs, and use the JXL files where you know they’re accepted.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Your own browser does the conversion, and the JXL files are saved straight to your device.
