How to make a favicon

  1. Choose one image, up to 50 MB: PNG, JPG, WebP, AVIF, GIF or BMP. A square PNG of at least 512 pixels works best.
  2. Pick how a non-square image fits, and the Apple icon’s background.
  3. Press Make favicons, then download the files one by one or as a ZIP.

The files you get

  • favicon.ico: the classic icon for browser tabs and bookmarks, holding 16, 32 and 48 pixel versions in one file.
  • apple-touch-icon.png (180 × 180): used when someone adds your site to an iPhone or iPad home screen. It gets a solid background, because home-screen icons look best without see-through areas.
  • icon-192.png and icon-512.png: for Android home screens and installed web apps, listed in site.webmanifest. The manifest’s name fields are left empty for you to fill in.

Adding them to your site

Put the five files in your site’s top folder, then add these lines inside the <head> of your pages:

<link rel="icon" href="/favicon.ico">
<link rel="apple-touch-icon" href="/apple-touch-icon.png">
<link rel="manifest" href="/site.webmanifest">

Browsers keep old icons for a while, so a new favicon can take a reload, or a fresh visit, to show. Website builders such as WordPress usually have their own setting for the site icon; there, upload the 512 px PNG instead.

Tips for a clear icon

At 16 pixels, detail disappears. A single letter, a simple symbol or the boldest part of your logo works better than a full logo with small text. Use strong contrast, and keep some space around the shape. Your image is reduced in steps for each size, which keeps edges clean; if it’s smaller than 512 pixels, the largest icons are enlarged from it and may look soft, and the result says so.

Frequently asked questions

What image should I start from?
A square PNG of your logo or initial, at least 512 × 512 pixels, ideally with a transparent background. Simple, bold shapes read best at 16 pixels, the size browser tabs show.
Which files do I need to upload to my site?
All five, into your site’s top folder (where the home page is): favicon.ico, apple-touch-icon.png, icon-192.png, icon-512.png and site.webmanifest. Then add the three lines shown on this page to your pages’ head.
My image isn’t square. What happens?
Choose “Fit the whole image” to keep all of it, centred with clear space on two sides, or “Fill the square” to cut the longer sides so it fills the icon.
Is my image uploaded?
No. Your own browser makes every icon, and the files are saved straight to your device.
