Why convert JXL to JPG
JPEG XL is a newer image format, standardized as ISO/IEC 18181, and its files end in .jxl. One can
turn up from an app, a website or a person who uses the newer format, but many browsers, photo viewers, email apps
and upload forms can’t open it yet. A JPG of the same picture opens almost everywhere, which is what you need to
look at it, send it on or attach it to a form.
How to convert
- Choose up to 30 JXL files (
.jxl), each up to 50 MB. You can also drop them on the box. - Leave the quality at 90, or change it (below).
- Press Convert to JPG, then download each JPG, or all of them together as a ZIP.
Choosing the quality
The number, from 1 to 100, sets how much detail the JPG keeps. 90, the default, suits photos, in a file that’s easy to email or upload. Lower numbers make smaller files with softer detail. JPG can leave faint smudges around sharp edges, so for screenshots, text and logos, JXL to PNG keeps them crisp instead. To bring a photo under a set size for a form, run the JPG through the Image Compressor.
A JXL reader on the page
Your browser may not read JPEG XL, so the page doesn’t rely on it: it brings its own decoder, libjxl, the reference JPEG XL library, compiled to run in your browser. It reads lossy and lossless JXL files, with or without transparency, on your device, and your pictures never leave it.
Good to know
- First use: the first time you convert, the page downloads the decoder from this site, about 0.9 MB. After that it starts at once.
- Transparency becomes white, since JPG has none.
- Animated JXL files give their first frame only.
- Size in pixels stays the same. To make a picture smaller, use the Image Resizer.
- Camera details, such as the date and GPS location, aren’t copied into the JPG.
- Keep the .jxl as well: the JPG is a new, compressed copy, so the JXL stays the best version you have.
- Names:
photo.jxlbecomesphoto.jpg. A file that can’t be read gets its own message, and the rest still convert.
