Why convert WebP to GIF
GIF is one of the oldest image formats on the web, and some places still accept it when they won’t take WebP:
some email programs, older forum software and older desktop programs. If an image
you saved from a website is a .webp and the place you want to use it asks for a GIF, this tool makes
one. For anything else, PNG or JPG is usually a better choice: WebP to PNG keeps
full color and soft transparency.
How to convert
- Choose up to 30 WebP images, each up to 50 MB. You can also drop them on the box or paste one.
- Press Convert to GIF.
- Download each GIF, or all of them together as a ZIP.
256 colors, and how the tool makes them fit
A GIF can hold at most 256 colors. Logos, icons and simple graphics usually have fewer, and they’re stored exactly. A photo has many thousands, so the tool picks the 256 that best cover the picture and then dithers: it scatters nearby colors in a fine pattern so that smooth skies and skin tones don’t break into visible bands. The result note says when an image was reduced this way.
Transparency and animation
- Transparency: pixels that are at least half see-through become fully clear; the rest become solid. GIF has no in-between, so soft shadows and smooth edges turn hard.
- Animation: this tool makes still GIFs. An animated WebP, such as a sticker, comes out as its first frame, and the note says so.
What else to know
- File size: GIF compresses photos poorly, so a GIF of a photo is often much bigger than the WebP. Graphics with few colors stay small.
- Size in pixels stays the same. To make a big image smaller first, use the Image Resizer.
- Names:
sticker.webpbecomessticker.gif. A file that can’t be read gets its own message, and the rest still convert.
