Why convert JXL to PNG

JPEG XL (.jxl) is a newer image format, standardized as ISO/IEC 18181. It stores photos and graphics, lossy or lossless, with transparency, but many browsers, image editors and apps can’t open it yet. PNG is the everyday format closest to it for graphics: lossless, with transparency, and it opens almost everywhere. Choose it for screenshots, logos, diagrams and any picture you’ll keep editing. For photos you only need to send, JXL to JPG makes much smaller files.

How to convert

  1. Choose up to 30 JXL files (.jxl), each up to 50 MB. You can also drop them on the box.
  2. Press Convert to PNG.
  3. Download each PNG, or all of them together as a ZIP.

What the PNG keeps

  • The picture, with no new loss: PNG compresses without throwing anything away, so converting adds no blur or blockiness.
  • Transparency, including soft edges and shadows.
  • Size in pixels: the same as the JXL.
  • The first frame of an animated JXL.

Camera details, such as the date and GPS location, aren’t copied into the PNG.

Editing a JXL

Many image editors can’t open JPEG XL yet, but almost all of them open PNG. Convert first, edit the PNG, then save the finished picture in whatever format you need. On this site, Crop Image, the Image Resizer and the Image Compressor all take PNG.

A JXL reader on the page

Your browser may not read JPEG XL, so the page doesn’t rely on it: it brings its own decoder, libjxl, the reference JPEG XL library, compiled to run in your browser. It reads lossy and lossless files, with or without transparency, on your device, and your pictures never leave it.

Good to know

  • First use: the first time you convert, the page downloads the decoder from this site, about 0.9 MB. After that it starts at once.
  • File size: a PNG can be much bigger than the JXL it came from, especially for photos. Each result shows its size.
  • For a website, PNG to WebP usually makes a smaller file that keeps the transparency, in a format current browsers all show.
  • Names: logo.jxl becomes logo.png. A file that can’t be read gets its own message, and the rest still convert.

Frequently asked questions

Is JXL to PNG lossless?
The PNG keeps the picture as the JXL is read. Reading converts its colors to sRGB, the standard range screens use, which can move a few values by 1 out of 255, too little to see. If the JXL was saved with loss, the PNG can’t bring back the detail it left out.
Does it keep transparency?
Yes. See-through areas in the JXL stay see-through in the PNG, soft edges and shadows included.
Why is the PNG bigger than the JXL?
PNG stores every pixel without loss, which takes a lot of room for a photo, while a JXL saved with loss drops fine detail to save space. For a photo you only need to send, JXL to JPG makes a smaller file.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Your own browser reads the JXL and makes the PNG, which is saved straight to your device.
