Why convert PNG to JXL

PNG is the usual format for screenshots, logos, diagrams and graphics with a clear background. JPEG XL (.jxl), a newer image format standardized as ISO/IEC 18181, can store the same pictures without loss, transparency included. Convert to JXL when a website, an app or a project asks for .jxl files, or to try the format on your own images and compare the sizes.

How to convert

  1. Choose up to 30 PNG images, each up to 50 MB. You can also drop them on the box or paste a screenshot.
  2. Press Convert to JXL.
  3. Download each JXL, or all of them together as a ZIP.

Lossless, every time

There’s no quality setting: each file is saved in JPEG XL’s lossless mode, with transparency and soft edges kept. That suits screenshots, text and line art, where any softening shows first. Turned back with JXL to PNG, colors are read into sRGB, which can move a few values by 1 out of 255. Two things change on the way in: a 16-bit PNG is reduced to 8 bits per color, and a PNG with a color profile has its colors converted to sRGB, the standard range screens use.

When to keep the PNG

Many browsers, image editors and upload forms can’t open JXL yet; Safari can, from version 17. Keep the PNG as your original, and use the JXL where you know it’s accepted. For pictures on a website that every current browser shows, PNG to WebP is the safer choice.

Good to know

  • First use: the first time you convert, the page downloads the encoder from this site, about 1.4 MB. After that it starts at once.
  • The encoder is libjxl, the reference JPEG XL library, compiled to run in your browser. Your images never leave your device.
  • Size: pictures up to 12 megapixels (for example 4000 × 3000) can be made into JXL here; a bigger one gets a message, and the Image Resizer can make it smaller first. Large pictures take a while; the bar moves on as each file is finished.
  • Screenshots can go straight from the clipboard: click this page and paste with Ctrl + V, or Command + V on a Mac.
  • Hidden details, such as text notes stored inside the PNG, aren’t copied into the JXL.
  • Names: logo.png becomes logo.jxl. Size in pixels stays the same. A file that can’t be read gets its own message, and the rest still convert.

Frequently asked questions

Is PNG to JXL lossless?
Yes, for ordinary 8-bit PNGs: each file is saved in JPEG XL’s lossless mode. A 16-bit PNG is reduced to 8 bits per color, and pictures over 4 megapixels use a faster setting, still lossless.
Does it keep transparency?
Yes. See-through areas stay see-through, soft edges and shadows included.
Will the JXL be smaller than my PNG?
It depends on the picture. Each result shows its size, so you can compare. If a JXL comes out no smaller, keep the PNG.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Your own browser does the conversion, and the JXL files are saved straight to your device.
