How to crop an image

  1. Choose one image, up to 50 MB: JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF or BMP. It appears with a crop box over it.
  2. Drag the box to move it, and drag a corner to resize it. Pick a shape to keep it square, 16:9 or another ratio.
  3. Press Crop image and download the result.

Three ways to set the box

  • Drag it, with a mouse, a finger or a pen. Corners resize it; the middle moves it.
  • Type it: Left, Top, Width and Height are in the picture’s own pixels, so “Width 1080, Height 1080” gives exactly 1080 × 1080.
  • With the keyboard: select the box with Tab and move it with the arrow keys, one pixel at a time, or ten with Shift.

Choosing a shape

Shapes keep the box in proportion while you resize it. Square (1:1) suits profile pictures and many social posts; 16:9 suits video thumbnails, slides and wide banners; 4:5 and 9:16 suit portrait posts and phone screens; 4:3 and 3:2 are the shapes of most camera photos, handy for prints. “Any shape” lets each side move on its own.

What you get

Exactly the area inside the box, at full resolution: nothing is shrunk or stretched. A photo taken sideways is shown and cropped the right way up. By default the result keeps the original’s format; a JPG is saved again at quality 92, which is very close to the original, and PNG keeps every pixel. You can save as JPG, PNG or WebP instead. Camera details such as GPS location aren’t copied into the result. The file is named after the original with “-cropped” added.

Need it smaller too?

Cropping keeps the pixels as they are. To make the result a set width, such as 800 pixels for a website, run it through the Image Resizer; to fit a file-size limit, the Image Compressor. To turn a picture rather than cut it, use Rotate and Flip Image.

Frequently asked questions

How do I crop to an exact size in pixels?
Type it into Width and Height, and the position into Left and Top. The box moves to match, and the result is exactly that area of the picture.
How do I make a square picture, for a profile photo?
Choose “Square (1:1)” as the shape, then drag the box over the part you want. It stays square however you resize it.
Does cropping lower the quality?
The pixels you keep aren’t changed or stretched. A JPG is saved again at high quality (92), which is very close to the original; PNG stays exact.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Your own browser shows the picture and cuts it, and the cropped image is saved straight to your device.
