Photos under 200 KB that still look like photos

200 KB is a comfortable size for a photo: small enough for most upload forms, websites and messages, large enough that a typical picture keeps its full width and height. A photo from a modern phone is often ten or twenty times that, so the gap is wide, but most of the extra size is detail the eye barely notices.

How to use it

  1. Choose up to 30 images, each up to 50 MB: JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF or BMP.
  2. Leave "Save as" on JPG for photos.
  3. Press Compress to 200 KB, then download each image, or all of them as a ZIP.

How the size is reached

The tool searches for the highest JPG quality that brings the image to 200 KB without touching its size in pixels, which is enough for most photos. Pictures that are very large, such as panoramas, or very detailed, such as a field of grass, may still be too big; those are made smaller in 15% steps until they fit. The note on each result tells you which happened.

When to use this, and when not

  • Good for: photos for websites and online shops, images for forms, pictures to send quickly over a slow connection.
  • Not for: photos you want to print large or edit later. Keep the original for those, and use the compressed copy for sharing.
  • Graphics and logos: if a logo needs a see-through background, keep it as PNG; a JPG fills transparency with white.

What else changes

Photos come out the right way up, even if the phone stored them sideways, and the hidden details a photo carries, such as the camera model, the date and the GPS location, aren't copied into the compressed version. If saving an image again would only make it bigger, as with one already well under 200 KB, you get the original back exactly as it was, details and all. Names get "-compressed" added, so the originals are never overwritten.

Other sizes

For tighter limits, try 100 KB, 50 KB or 20 KB. To set your own size or quality, use the Image Compressor.

Frequently asked questions

Will my photos stay the same size in pixels?
Most photos do: at 200 KB, lowering the quality is usually enough. Only very large or very detailed pictures need to be made smaller too, and the note on the result says when that happened.
My image was already under 200 KB. What happens?
If a smaller version in the same format isn’t possible, you get the original back unchanged, with a note saying so.
Can I keep my images as PNG?
Choose “Same as the original”. A PNG can only shrink by losing pixels, so for photos JPG gives a much better result at 200 KB.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Your own browser compresses them; nothing is sent anywhere.
