Why convert JPG to WebP

WebP is an image format made by Google for the web. A photo saved as WebP is usually smaller than the same photo as a JPG at a similar look, so pages load faster and use less data. That’s why many websites use it for photos, and why page-speed tests such as Google’s PageSpeed Insights suggest modern formats like WebP. For sending a photo to a person or a printer, a JPG is still the safer choice: more programs open it.

How to convert

  1. Choose up to 30 JPG images, each up to 50 MB. You can also drop them on the box or paste one.
  2. Leave the quality at 85, or change it (below).
  3. Press Convert to WebP, then download each file, or all of them together as a ZIP.

Choosing the quality

The number, from 1 to 100, sets how much detail the WebP keeps. 85 is a good balance for photos on a website. Higher keeps more fine detail and makes bigger files; lower makes smaller files with softer detail. Each result shows its size, so you can compare it with the JPG and try another number if you need to. A JPG that has already been compressed hard won’t shrink much further: converting can’t recover detail, and a high setting may even make a slightly bigger file.

Safari, iPhone and iPad

Chrome, Edge and Firefox make WebP files themselves. Safari, and the other browsers on an iPhone or iPad that use Safari’s engine, can show WebP but can’t make it. When the page finds your browser can’t, it loads a WebP encoder of its own (libwebp, the reference WebP library) the first time you convert. It runs on your device, like everything else here, and your images still never leave it.

What else to know

  • Size in pixels stays the same; for web pages, the Image Resizer can make big photos smaller too.
  • Rotation and camera details: sideways phone photos come out upright, and camera details, GPS location included, aren’t copied.
  • Names: photo.jpg becomes photo.webp. A file that can’t be read gets its own message, and the rest still convert.

Frequently asked questions

Will the WebP be smaller than my JPG?
Usually, at a similar look. It depends on the picture and the quality you choose, so check the size shown for each result. If a WebP comes out no smaller, keep the JPG.
Can everyone open a WebP file?
Current web browsers all show WebP, and so do most phones and recent versions of Windows and macOS. Some older programs, print services and upload forms still don’t accept it.
Does it work in Safari?
Yes. Safari can show WebP but can’t make it, so there this page loads a WebP encoder of its own the first time you convert. It runs in your browser like the rest.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Your own browser does the conversion, and the WebP files are saved straight to your device.
