Language Mnemonic Cards

Write a memory hook for each new word, keep your cards in one library and review them as flip cards. You write the hooks; the tool keeps them and shows them back.

How to write a memory hook

One common way is the keyword method: link the sound of the new word to a vivid image tied to its meaning.

  1. Say the new word out loud. Find a word or short phrase in a language you know that sounds like it, or like part of it.
  2. Picture a scene that joins that sound-alike to the meaning. Make it odd, funny or exaggerated, something you can see clearly.
  3. Write the hook in one or two short sentences, in your own words.
  4. Add an example sentence so you see the word in use.

Frequently asked questions

What is a memory hook, and how do the cards work?
A memory hook is a short note you write that links the sound of a new word to a picture of what it means. Each card holds the word, its meaning, your hook and an optional example. In Review you see the word first, then flip the card to check the meaning and your hook.
Where are my cards kept?
Only in this browser on this device. Clearing your browser's site data, or opening the tool in another browser or on another device, means you won't see them, so use Export JSON to keep a copy.
How does Import JSON work?
It adds the cards from an exported file to the ones you already have. A card with the same word and language as one in your library (ignoring capitals) is skipped, and so is any card missing a word, meaning or hook. The library holds up to 5,000 cards.
Does it write the memory hooks for me?
No. You write every hook yourself, and the tool keeps your cards and shows them back for review. A hook you make up is built from sounds and pictures that already mean something to you.
