Placeholder text for layouts and mockups
When you design a page, a poster or an app screen before the real words exist, placeholder text shows how the layout will look once it’s full. Lorem ipsum is the classic choice: it has words and sentences of different lengths, like real writing, but nobody stops to read it, so attention stays on the design.
How to use it
- Choose how much you need: up to 100 paragraphs, 1,000 sentences or 10,000 words.
- Choose whether it starts with “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit”.
- Choose plain text, or HTML with each paragraph in <p> tags.
- Press New text for a different version, then copy it or download it as a .txt file.
Where the words come from
The words are the 63 different words of the standard lorem ipsum passage, which begins “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet”. That passage is scrambled Latin taken from Cicero’s De finibus bonorum et malorum (On the Ends of Good and Evil), written in 45 BC and long in the public domain. In Book 1, Cicero writes of “dolorem ipsum”, pain itself, and the placeholder’s first words come from there.
How the text is put together
- Sentences have 4 to 14 words picked at random, never the same word twice in a row, with a comma in sentences of 8 words or more.
- Paragraphs have 4 to 7 sentences. Sentences and words come as one paragraph.
- Words gives exactly the number you ask for, ending with a period; the last sentence may be short.
- The opening is always the first sentence when it’s ticked, cut short if you ask for fewer than 8 words.
Good to know
- It means nothing, so it can’t be translated, and it isn’t Latin a reader could follow.
