Stand-in pictures for mockups and layouts

When a design, a web page or a slide needs a picture that doesn’t exist yet, a placeholder holds its place at exactly the right size. Labeled with its own dimensions, it tells everyone what the final picture has to be, and it keeps the layout true to size while you work.

How to use it

  1. Pick a preset size, or type the width and height in pixels, from 1 to 4000.
  2. Choose the background and text colors with the pickers, or type hex codes such as #e5e5e5.
  3. Leave the text empty to show the size, or type a label such as “Hero image”.
  4. Check the preview, then download PNG, JPG, WebP or SVG.

The presets

  • 1200 × 630 is a widely used size for the picture shown when a link is shared.
  • 1080 × 1080 and 1080 × 1920 are square posts and full-screen vertical stories on social apps.
  • 1920 × 1080 and 1280 × 720 are 16:9, the shape of most screens, videos and slides.
  • 300 × 250 and 728 × 90 are two standard display ad sizes.
  • 1584 × 396 is a LinkedIn background photo.

Which format to download

  • PNG keeps flat color and text crisp: the usual choice.
  • JPG suits tools that only take photos, though faint smudges can show around the text.
  • WebP makes small files for web pages. It’s offered only when your browser can make it.
  • SVG is a tiny file with the label as real text, sharp at any size and easy to edit in a design app. It uses the viewer’s own font, so it can look slightly different on another device.

Readable labels

The tool checks the contrast between the text and background colors with the formula from WCAG 2, the web’s accessibility guidelines, which ask for at least 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text. Below that, you’ll see a warning. Gray on gray looks tidy, but it can be hard to read on a projector or on a phone in sunlight.

Frequently asked questions

What is a placeholder image for?
It stands in for a picture that isn’t ready yet: in a website mockup, a page layout, a slide draft or a design being tested. With its size printed on it, it also tells the designer or photographer exactly what to deliver.
Can I use my own text instead of the size?
Yes. Type any label, such as “Product photo” or “Team picture”. Leave the box empty and the size is shown. The text sizes itself to fit unless you set a size.
Why is there no WebP button?
Some browsers can show WebP pictures but can’t make them. The WebP button appears only when your browser can save that format; PNG, JPG and SVG work in every browser.
Is anything uploaded?
No. The picture is drawn on this page, on your device, and nothing is sent or saved.
