Social Media Character Counter

Paste a post once and see, site by site, its count, the limit and how many characters are left, worked out from each site’s own counting rules.

0 characters

Up to 50,000 characters. The counts update as you type.

Paste or type a post to see how it counts against each limit.

  • X post 0 / 280 280 left

A link counts 23 and an emoji 2. Every other character counts 1 or 2 by X’s published table: … and €, for example, count 2.

  • Bluesky post 0 / 300 300 left

    0 / 3,000 bytes, 3,000 left

Counted as you see them, so an emoji is 1, and the post must also stay within 3,000 bytes. Links count as typed.

  • Threads post 0 / 500 500 left

Each emoji counts as its size in bytes, such as 4 for 😀; other characters count 1. Meta describes this for posts made through its API.

  • Mastodon post 0 / 500 500 left

A link counts 23, and a mention counts only its username: @sam on any server counts as @sam. Each server sets its own limit; 500 is the default.

  • LinkedIn post 0 / 3,000 3,000 left

Counted as you see them, so an emoji is 1: LinkedIn doesn’t say how it counts emoji.

  • YouTube video title 0 / 100 100 left

Counted as you see them, so an emoji is 1: YouTube doesn’t say how it counts emoji.

  • YouTube video description 0 / 5,000 5,000 left

Counted as you see them, so an emoji is 1: YouTube doesn’t say how it counts emoji.

  • Your own limit 0 Enter a limit to count against it.

Counted as you see them, so an emoji or an accented letter is 1.

These counts are what this page works out from each site’s published rules, not the site’s own counter. Sites can change their limits and the way they count, so leave a margin.

A link, here, is text that starts with http:// or https://, up to the next space; a period, comma or closing bracket right after it isn’t part of it. An address without http:// or https://, such as example.com, counts as typed.

Your post stays on this page, on your device: nothing is sent or saved, and the page isn’t connected to any of these sites.

One post, counted the way each site counts it

Sites cap how long a post, a title or a description can be, and they don’t all count the same way: one counts every link as 23 characters, another counts an emoji by its size in bytes. Paste your post once and see where it stands against each limit before you publish it.

How to use it

  1. Paste or type your post, or press Fill in an example.
  2. Read each row: the count, the limit, and how many characters are left or over.
  3. If you post to Mastodon, type your server’s limit in its row.
  4. To check another box, such as a shop listing title, type a label and a limit in the last row.

How each site counts

  • X: 280, weighted. A link counts 23 and an emoji 2. Characters from code point 0 to 4,351, which take in most Latin, Greek and Cyrillic letters among many others, and some spaces, dashes, quotes and primes count 1; all others count 2.
  • Bluesky: 300 characters as you see them, and no more than 3,000 bytes. Links count as typed.
  • Threads: 500, with each emoji counted as its size in bytes, as Meta describes for posts made through its API.
  • Mastodon: 500 unless your server sets another limit. A link counts 23, and a mention counts only its username: @sam on any server counts as @sam.
  • LinkedIn posts (3,000), YouTube titles (100) and descriptions (5,000): counted as you see them, because neither site says how it counts emoji.

What counts as a link

Text that starts with http:// or https://, up to the next space. A period, comma or closing bracket right after it isn’t part of it. An address written without http:// or https://, such as example.com, counts as typed, so write a link in full to see it counted as one.

Good to know

  • Leave a margin: the counts are what this page works out from each site’s published rules, not the site’s own counter, and sites can change their limits and the way they count.
  • Private: your post stays on your device. Nothing is sent or saved, and the page isn’t connected to any site.
  • Other counters: the Word and Character Counter counts words and characters for essays and forms, and the Thread Splitter cuts a long text into numbered posts; this page checks one post against each site’s own way of counting.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the X count different from the number of characters I see?
X weighs characters. A link always counts 23, an emoji 2, and characters outside the ranges X lists, such as … and €, count 2 each. So emoji and symbols make a post count higher than it looks, and a long link makes it count lower.
Is this the number the site will show?
It should be close, but this isn’t the site’s own counter. The page works the counts out from each site’s published rules, and sites can change their limits and the way they count at any time, so leave a few characters spare.
Why isn’t the site I post on listed?
Only sites that publish their limit are listed. Type a label and the limit your site’s box shows in the last row, and the post is counted against it as you see the characters.
Is my post sent anywhere?
No. It’s counted by this page, on your device. Nothing is sent, saved or put in the page address, and the page isn’t connected to any social site.
