Measure your typing speed and accuracy
Knowing your typing speed shows whether practice is paying off, and roughly how long a long email or report will take to type. This test times you on a short passage of everyday writing and gives your speed in words per minute and your accuracy, marking each mistake the moment you make it.
How to use it
- Choose 30 seconds, 1 minute or 2 minutes.
- Tap or click the box under the passage and start typing. The clock starts with your first character.
- Type what you see. A wrong character turns red and is underlined; fix it with Backspace or keep going.
- When the time is up, or you reach the end of the text, your result appears. Restart tries the same passage again; New passage moves to the next one.
How it’s scored
- Words per minute: typing tests count a word as five characters, spaces and punctuation included, so long and short words even out. Your speed is the characters typed correctly, divided by 5, divided by the minutes taken.
- Accuracy: the share of all the characters you typed that were right when you typed them. A mistake you fix still counts here, though the fixed character then counts toward your speed.
- Errors left: characters still wrong at the end of the test. They add nothing to your speed.
On a phone or tablet
The test works with an on-screen keyboard as well as a physical one. Autocorrect, automatic capitals and spell check are turned off for the typing box, so what you type is what counts, and capitals need the shift key. If your keyboard suggests words and you tap one, its letters count as typed. Pasting is turned off during a test.
Good to know
- The passages were written for this test: everyday prose with no quotation marks or apostrophes to trip over. When one ends, the next follows.
- Nothing is saved: your typing and results aren’t stored or sent anywhere, and reloading the page clears them.
- Counting words in your own writing? The Word and Character Counter does that as you type.
- Practicing in short rounds? The Focus Timer can time your breaks.
