Video Chapters Formatter

Paste your chapter times and titles to tidy them into one format and check them against the chapter rules before you publish.

Times like 0:00, 00:00 or 1:02:03, with a hyphen, a dash or nothing before the title.

Checks the last chapter is long enough too.

Paste your times and titles to format and check them.

Your list stays on this page, on your device: nothing is fetched, sent or saved.

A chapter list that’s ready to paste

Chapters split a video into named parts, so viewers can skip straight to the part they want. On YouTube you make them by listing times and titles in the video’s description, and a list that breaks one of the rules shows no chapters at all. Paste your times and titles here to tidy them into one consistent format and check them before you publish.

How to use it

  1. Paste or type one chapter per line: a time, then its title. 0:00, 00:00 and 1:02:03 all work, with a hyphen, a dash or nothing between.
  2. Add the video’s length if you’d like the last chapter checked too.
  3. Choose how the times look and what goes between each time and its title.
  4. Fix anything listed under the result, then copy the list into your video’s description.

The rules it checks

These are the rules YouTube’s help page “Add chapters to your videos” lists:

  • The first chapter starts at 0:00.
  • There are at least three chapters, in order of time.
  • Each chapter is at least 10 seconds long. With the video’s length, the last chapter is checked too.

Reading the results

Each problem names its line, so you can find it in your text. A line the tool can’t read, such as one with no time at the start or no title, is named and left out of the list, and the rest is still formatted and checked. Titles stay as you typed them; only extra spaces are tidied. YouTube decides whether to show chapters on a video; a list that passes here meets the rules its help page lists, which is what this page can check.

Good to know

  • It works only on what you paste. It doesn’t fetch anything, and it isn’t connected to YouTube or any other site.
  • Nothing is sent or saved: the list stays on your device, and reloading the page clears it.
  • Your order stays: lines keep the order you typed them in, so a line out of place is pointed out rather than moved.
  • Up to 500 lines at a time, which is far more chapters than a video needs.
  • Long videos: with Same shape on every line, a video of an hour or more gets hours on every line, as in 0:04:05.

Frequently asked questions

What are the rules for video chapters?
As YouTube’s help page “Add chapters to your videos” lists them: the first chapter starts at 0:00, there are at least three chapters in order of time, and each one is at least 10 seconds long. This tool checks all three.
Which time formats can I paste?
0:00, 00:00, 4:05, 12:30 and 1:02:03, with a hyphen, a dash, a colon or just a space before the title, and with or without brackets around the time. Seconds always need two digits, so write 0:05 rather than 0:5.
Can it promise my chapters will show?
No. YouTube decides whether to show chapters on a video. This page checks the rules its help page lists, so a list that passes has none of the problems those rules would catch.
Is my list sent anywhere?
No. It’s read and checked by this page, on your device. Nothing is fetched, sent, saved or put in the page address.
