XML Sitemap Generator
Paste your site’s page addresses, one per line, and get a sitemap file to upload. Nothing is crawled: the file lists exactly the addresses you give.
Full addresses on one host, up to 10 MB of text. They’re written into the file and never visited.
Put on every address. Use the date the pages last changed.
Where you’ll upload it. Empty: sitemap.xml at the top of your addresses’ host.
Change frequency and priority (left out unless you choose them)
Google says it ignores both tags; other search engines may read them. Priority is relative to your other pages, so the same priority on every address tells a search engine nothing.
Paste your page addresses above, one per line.
Your files
Upload every file to the same folder, then give search engines the address of the index.
Everything happens on this page: no address is visited or checked online, and nothing is sent or saved.
A sitemap from your own list of pages
An XML sitemap lists the pages on your site you’d like search engines to find, so new or deeply linked pages don’t wait to be discovered. Many site builders make one for you; if yours doesn’t, or you want one for a particular set of pages, paste the addresses here. The file follows the sitemaps.org protocol, which the major search engines read.
How to use it
- Paste the full addresses, one per line, all on the same host.
- Optionally, set the date the pages last changed and the address the sitemap will have.
- Read the lines under the options: what went in, and anything left out or rewritten, with line numbers.
- Download the file, upload it to your site, and name it in your robots.txt or a search engine’s webmaster tools.
What it checks
- One host: every address must use the sitemap’s own host and protocol, so https://www.example.com and http://example.com can’t share a file.
- Standard form: spaces become %20 and accented letters their percent-escapes; characters such as & are written the way XML needs them.
- Repeats are listed once, and the part of an address after # is dropped, because it’s never sent to the server.
- Length: an address must be under 2,048 characters.
Big sites
One sitemap may hold up to 50,000 addresses and 50 MB. Past either limit, the list is split into numbered files, sitemap-1.xml, sitemap-2.xml and so on, plus a sitemap index that lists them. Each file has its own download button, and you submit only the index.
Where to put it
Upload the file to the top of your site, so its address is https://www.example.com/sitemap.xml, unless you set another address above. A sitemap can list only pages in its own folder and below, so one kept in /blog/ can’t list pages in /shop/. Then tell search engines where it is: add a Sitemap line with its full address to your robots.txt, or submit it in their webmaster tools.
Good to know
- It doesn’t crawl your site. Pages you leave off the list aren’t in the file.
- A sitemap is a suggestion: it helps search engines find pages, but doesn’t make them list any.
- Tidy the list first? Remove Duplicate Lines gives each line of a list once.
- Point crawlers to it with a Sitemap line from the Robots.txt Generator.
