Files to pack
Your ZIP
Compressing shrinks text, spreadsheets and many documents. Files that wouldn’t get smaller, such as photos, videos and other ZIPs, are stored as they are either way; Store only is quicker.
.zip is added at the end. Characters Windows doesn’t allow in names become a dash.
Everything happens on this page, on your device: your files are never uploaded or saved.
Many files, one tidy download
Sending twenty attachments one at a time is slow, and some upload forms take only one file. A ZIP puts them all in a single file that’s easy to send, store and open again. This page builds it in your browser, so your files don’t pass through anyone else’s server on the way.
How to use it
- Choose up to 50 files, or drop them on the box. Each can be up to 25 MB.
- Check the list. Remove any file with its × button, or add more.
- Choose Compress or Store only, and type a name for the ZIP.
- Press Make the ZIP, then Download. A big job shows its progress, and Cancel stops it.
What the options do
- Compress (deflate, level 6): the usual ZIP compression at zlib’s default level, a balance of size and speed. A file that wouldn’t get smaller is stored as it is.
- Store only: no compression at all. Quicker, and just as small for photos, videos and music, which are compressed already.
- ZIP name: what the download is called. The .zip ending is added for you.
Names inside the ZIP
Every file goes in at the top level, with no folders. Two files with the same name can’t share a ZIP, so the second becomes photo (2).jpg; capital letters don’t count, as on Windows and macOS. Each file keeps its own date and time, and names in any language are marked as UTF-8, so accents and other scripts come out right when the ZIP is opened.
Good to know
- Nothing is uploaded or saved. The files stay on your device, and closing the page clears them.
- Each file’s check value (CRC-32) goes into the ZIP too, so the program that opens it can tell whether anything was damaged on the way.
- No password protection: anyone who has the ZIP can open it, so don’t rely on it to keep anything private.
- Big batches take a moment. Compressing hundreds of megabytes can take a while on a phone; the bar shows how far it has got.
- Other tools already zip their own results. The image and PDF tools have a Download all button for that; this page zips any files you choose.
- Need smaller photos or PDFs first? The Image Compressor and Compress PDF shrink them far more than a ZIP can.
