Notice Period Calculator
Enter the day you give notice and how long your notice period is, and see your last day, counted in days, working days, weeks or months. What you type stays in your browser.
Know your last day before you resign
Resigning starts a countdown: your notice period. Knowing exactly when it ends matters for agreeing a start date with a new employer, planning a handover, and booking any time off. Counting it by hand is easy to get wrong, especially with months of different lengths or a period counted in working days. This calculator does the counting.
How to use it
- Pick the day you give, or plan to give, your notice.
- Enter the length of your notice period, and choose how it is counted: calendar days, working days, weeks or months, as your contract says.
- Read your last day, the number of calendar and working days in between, and whether the end falls on a weekend.
How the counting works
- Weeks and days: counted from the day notice is given, so two weeks from Friday ends on the Friday two weeks later.
- Months: the same date in the later month, or that month’s last day if it’s shorter.
- Working days: Monday to Friday, starting the day after you give notice.
- Weekends: if the end date falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the tool shows the Friday before as your last working day.
Worked examples
- Two weeks given on Friday, October 16: the notice ends on Friday, October 30.
- One month given on January 31: the notice ends on February 28 (or 29 in a leap year).
- Ten working days given on Wednesday, October 14: counting from Thursday and skipping two weekends, the notice ends on Wednesday, October 28.
- Four weeks given on a Sunday ends on a Sunday; the tool then points to the Friday before as your likely last working day.
Things the tool can’t know
Contracts and laws differ. Some notice periods start the day after notice is given, some end on a set day of the week, and public holidays may or may not count. Check your contract, and if it’s unclear, ask HR to confirm the date in writing. Use the result as a starting point for that conversation.
Next steps
- Write your letter: Letter Templates has a resignation letter that states your last day.
- Tell your new employer the date once it’s confirmed, so they can set your start date.
