How to merge videos

  1. Choose 2 to 10 videos, MP4, M4V, MOV, WebM or MKV, each up to 25 MB, up to 30 minutes long in all.
  2. Put them in order with the arrows beside each file. The merged video follows the list from top to bottom.
  3. Press Merge videos and download the result. It’s named after the first file: holiday-clip.mp4 gives holiday-clip-merged.mp4.

When the clips match: copied

Clips from the same phone, camera or app usually share the same format and settings: the same kind of video, picture size and rotation. Then they’re copied end to end into the first file’s format, not re-encoded, so it’s quick and nothing is lost.

When they don’t: re-encoded

Clips from different sources, or of different sizes, are re-encoded together as H.264 in an MP4, at the first video’s size, at most 1920 × 1080, or 1080 × 1920 when it’s tall. A clip of another shape is fitted inside that frame with black bars, so put the clip whose shape you want first. Re-encoding takes a while, longer for longer videos, and can lose a little quality. A progress bar shows how far it has got, and Cancel stops it. The note under the result says whether the video was copied or re-encoded, and gives its length.

The sound

The sound is kept. When every clip has the same kind of sound, it’s copied too. Otherwise it’s made anew by your browser, and a clip with no sound gets silence for its length, so picture and sound stay together at every join. Firefox can’t make AAC, so there an MP4 whose sound is made anew gets Opus sound, which browsers and VLC play.

Which browsers work

Copying needs nothing special: matching clips merge in current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, even HEVC (H.265) from an iPhone. Re-encoding needs a current Chrome, Edge or Firefox, or Safari 16.4 or later; in Safari, making the sound anew needs version 26 or later. HEVC clips that have to be re-encoded need a browser that can decode them, such as Safari.

Good to know

Your videos stay on your device; nothing is uploaded. If a clip can’t be read, the tool names it and makes nothing. This tool joins whole clips; to keep just one part of a video, use Trim Video first, then merge the parts. To join sound files instead, use Merge Audio.

Frequently asked questions

How do I change the order?
Use the up and down arrows beside each file. The merged video follows the list from top to bottom, so the top file plays first.
Why was my video re-encoded?
The clips didn’t all share the same format and settings, such as the same picture size, so they couldn’t be copied end to end. They were re-encoded together as H.264 in an MP4, which takes longer and can lose a little quality.
What happens to clips of different shapes?
Each is fitted inside the first video’s frame, with black bars where its shape differs. Put the clip whose shape you want first in the list.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Your browser joins the videos, and the result is saved straight to your device.
