How to remove the sound from a video
- Choose a video, MP4, M4V, MOV, WebM or MKV, up to 25 MB and 30 minutes long. A line under it shows its length, picture size and formats, including its sound.
- Press Mute video. It takes a moment, because nothing is re-encoded.
- Download the silent copy: holiday-clip.mov becomes holiday-clip-muted.mov.
When it helps
Wind on a phone’s microphone, a conversation in the room, notification sounds caught in a screen recording, or music you don’t have the right to share can spoil an otherwise good clip. A silent copy is ready to post as it is, to put in a slideshow, or to take into an editing app and add new sound. It also helps when a site or a chat app plays videos with the sound on and you’d rather it didn’t.
What it does
- The video is copied: the pictures go into the new file as they are, not re-encoded, so the quality is exactly the same and it takes a moment, not minutes.
- All the sound goes: every sound track is removed, not just turned down, so there’s nothing left for anyone to turn back up.
- Same format: MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV files stay in their own format; an M4V comes out as an MP4, the same kind of file under its more common name.
- Everything else stays: the picture size, frame rate and length are as they were. The note under the result lists what’s inside, ending “no sound”, so you can check before you download.
Which browsers work
Current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. Nothing is converted, so it doesn’t matter which video formats your browser can play: it works even with HEVC (H.265) video from an iPhone in a browser that can’t show it.
Good to know
Your video stays on your device: the sound is removed in your browser, and nothing is uploaded. One video at a time; a video with no sound to begin with simply comes out as a copy. Keep the original if you might want the sound later. To save the sound on its own instead, use MP4 to M4A; to shorten the clip as well, use Trim Video, and to turn a sideways clip upright, use Rotate Video.
