How to trim a video

  1. Choose a video, MP4, M4V, MOV, WebM or MKV, up to 25 MB and 30 minutes long. Two sliders and pictures of the first and last frames appear under it.
  2. Drag the sliders, or type the start and end as seconds (65.5) or minutes and seconds (1:05.5). The pictures follow, and the line under the sliders shows the length you’ve chosen.
  3. Press Trim video and download the clip.

The fast way

Normally the part you keep is copied, not re-encoded: no quality is lost, and it takes a second or two. Video is stored as key frames, which are complete pictures, with the frames between them saved as changes, so a clip can only begin cleanly at a key frame. In MP4 and MOV files, the frames needed just before your start are kept but hidden, so most players begin exactly where you chose. In WebM and MKV files, the clip starts at the key frame just before your start, which can be up to a few seconds earlier.

Cutting exactly

Tick “Cut exactly at these times” and the part you keep is re-encoded, as H.264 for MP4, MOV and MKV or VP9 for WebM, so it starts and ends right where you chose. It takes longer, can lose a little quality, and makes video at most 1920 × 1080. The sound is still copied, to within a few hundredths of a second, so this needs only a browser that can re-encode video: Safari 16.4 or later, or a current Chrome, Edge or Firefox.

The pictures

The pictures show the frames at your start and end, so you can see where the cut falls. They need a browser that can decode the video. HEVC (H.265), which iPhones often record, can’t be shown in some browsers: then there are no pictures, “Cut exactly” is turned off, and the fast trim still works, because it copies the video as it is.

Good to know

The clip keeps the original’s format, and its name gets “-trimmed”: holiday-clip.mov becomes holiday-clip-trimmed.mov; an M4V comes out as an MP4. The note under the result shows the clip’s length and whether the video was copied or re-encoded. Your video stays on your device; nothing is uploaded. To turn a few seconds into an animation, use Video to GIF; to cut a sound file, use Trim Audio.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my clip start a little early?
In WebM and MKV files, the fast trim starts at the key frame just before your start, which can be up to a few seconds earlier. Tick “Cut exactly at these times” to start right where you chose. MP4 and MOV clips start where you chose in most players.
Does trimming lose quality?
Not the fast way: the part you keep is copied, not re-encoded. “Cut exactly” re-encodes it, which can lose a little quality.
Why are there no pictures of the frames?
Your browser can’t decode this video’s pictures, as with HEVC (H.265) from an iPhone in some browsers. The sliders and the fast trim still work, because the fast trim copies the video as it is.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Your browser trims the video, and the clip is saved straight to your device.
