How to save pictures from a video
- Choose a video, MP4, M4V, MOV, WebM or MKV, up to 25 MB and 30 minutes long. Two sliders and pictures of the first and last frames appear under it.
- Drag the sliders, or type the start and end, to pick the part to take pictures from. The whole video is chosen to start with.
- Choose a set number of pictures or one every so many seconds, and a size.
- Press Make JPGs, then download each picture, or all of them together as a ZIP.
Choosing the moments
- A set number: spread evenly across the part you chose, the first at its start. Ten pictures from a one-minute video come 6 seconds apart, from 0:00 to 0:54.
- One every…: from the start of the part, every half second up to every minute. One every 5 seconds from a one-minute video gives 12 pictures.
- Up to 100 at a time: if your choice would make more, the page says so before it starts. Pick a longer gap, fewer pictures or a shorter part.
Size and quality
Full size keeps the video’s own picture size, up to 1920 pixels on the long side, so a 4K video’s pictures come out at 1920 × 1080. Choose 1280 or 640 pixels for smaller files to put on a web page or send in a message. Each picture is saved as a JPG at quality 90, and pictures from a phone video come out upright, as it plays. A picture is as sharp as the frame it comes from, so fast movement may look blurred.
Which browsers work
Saving pictures means reading the video’s frames, so it needs a current Chrome, Edge or Firefox, or Safari 16.4 or later. HEVC (H.265) video, which iPhones often record, needs a browser that can decode it, such as Safari; if yours can’t, the page says so when you choose the file.
Good to know
Your video stays on your device; nothing is uploaded. Each picture is named for its moment: holiday-clip.mp4 gives holiday-clip-0m00.0s.jpg, holiday-clip-1m05.5s.jpg and so on, and the results list each one with its size and moment. A picture is a single still: to keep the movement, make an animation with Video to GIF, and to turn your own photos into one, use GIF Maker.
