How to crop a video
- Choose a video, MP4, M4V, MOV, WebM or MKV, up to 25 MB and 30 minutes long. A picture of it appears with a crop box over it.
- Drag the box to move it, and drag a corner to resize it. Pick a shape to keep it square, 9:16 or another ratio.
- Press Crop video. A progress bar shows how far it has got, and Cancel stops it. Then download the copy.
Three ways to set the box
- Drag it, with a mouse, a finger or a pen. Corners resize it; the middle moves it.
- Type it: Left, Top, Width and Height are in the video’s own pixels, so “Width 1080, Height 1080” keeps exactly a 1080 × 1080 square.
- With the keyboard: select the box with Tab and move it with the arrow keys, one pixel at a time, or ten with Shift.
The picture is a frame from about a second in. The box stays in the same place for the whole video, so check that what you want to keep doesn’t move out of it later on.
What you get
Just the area inside the box. It’s re-encoded, as H.264 for MP4, MOV and MKV or VP9 for WebM, which takes a while and can lose a little quality. Phone videos are turned upright first, so the box matches what you see. The result is at most 1920 × 1080, or 1080 × 1920 when it’s tall: a larger area is scaled down to fit, and a smaller one is never enlarged. Each side is rounded down to an even number of pixels, as these video formats need. The sound is copied as it is. The area must be at least 16 × 16 pixels.
Which browsers work
Cropping re-encodes the video, so it needs a current Chrome, Edge or Firefox, or Safari 16.4 or later. HEVC (H.265) video from an iPhone has to be decoded first, which works in Safari, and in Chrome or Edge only on computers whose hardware decodes it, not in Firefox.
Good to know
Your video stays on your device; nothing is uploaded. The copy keeps the original’s format, and its name gets “-cropped”: holiday-clip.mov becomes holiday-clip-cropped.mov; an M4V comes out as an MP4. This tool cuts away the edges of a video’s picture. To crop a photo instead, use Crop Image; to make a video file smaller without cutting anything away, use Compress Video.
