When a job site says your resume is too big

Application forms and job sites often cap uploads, and a resume with a photo, a designed template or scanned certificates can go over the limit. This tool brings your resume PDF under the size you pick, by shrinking the pictures inside it, and leaves the words alone.

How to use it

  1. Choose your resume PDF, up to 100 MB. You can do up to 5 at once.
  2. Pick the size it has to fit, such as the limit the job site gives.
  3. Press Compress resume and download the smaller PDF. Check it before you send it.

What it changes, and what it never does

  • Photos, logos and scans inside the PDF are saved again at a smaller size, gently first and more firmly only if needed to fit.
  • Text is never changed. It stays real text that can be selected, searched and read by software, in the same fonts. The pages aren’t turned into pictures, which would make the text unreadable to hiring software.
  • Links, such as your email address or portfolio, keep working.

A resume that is all text is usually already small, often well under 1 MB; the result note will say if there was nothing large to shrink. If it still won’t fit, the note gives the smallest size reached.

Check how it reads

Before you apply, it’s worth seeing your resume the way applicant tracking software reads it. Readback, our resume checker, does that on your device too. To see the raw text it holds, try Resume to Plain Text; for any other PDF, Compress PDF offers more strengths and sizes.

Frequently asked questions

Will compressing my resume affect how hiring software reads it?
The text isn’t touched: it stays real, selectable text, exactly as before. Only photos and scanned images inside the PDF are made smaller. To see how software reads your resume, use Readback, our resume checker.
My resume is still the same size. Why?
A resume made in a word processor is mostly text and is usually small already; text can’t be squeezed much further without harming it. Big resumes are big because of photos, logos or scanned pages, and those are what this tool shrinks.
What size should my resume be?
Check the job site or application form: its upload limit is usually stated next to the upload button. If no limit is given, keeping it under 1 MB makes it quick to send and upload.
Is my resume uploaded?
No. Your own browser makes it smaller, and the new PDF is saved straight to your device. Your resume never leaves it.
